Yep, we’re going there tonight.
Am I the only one who eats certain foods simply because they are touted as “healthy?” I realized I do it a whole lot more than I should. And you know what? I usually go ahead and eat whatever I was craving after eating the health food. Totally defeats the point!
So, today, I’m going to admit to the foods I really don’t like – but tend to choose anyways. I read a quote that was saying people with a healthy mindset towards healthy food really believe everything in moderation and I completely agree with that! When a food gets branded as good or bad, then too many of our thoughts become wrapped around making sure we don’t touch the bad. Then it becomes unhealthily obsessive! I’m generalizing, but I think you know what I mean. (I’m not saying to go stuff your face with lard, ok? )
The goal of this post is not to say don’t eat healthy foods you don’t like, but to choose not to be enslaved by what others deem healthy or unhealthy. One diet does not fit all!
Here we go! I feel like I should always choose:
Kale instead lettuce. It honestly makes my mouth want to turn inside out. Maybe I’ve gotten bad kale recently, but this year, it just tastes so bitter!
Green Tea instead of, well, other teas. I tried, I really did. I’m a black coffee gal. Or a chai tea latte … but then I add so much sugar, any benefit of tea is gone.
Black Bean Brownie Dip instead of Brownies. Yes, I admit that I’ve tried this. And although the black bean brownie dip is good, I either 1) eat it all in one go because it is so good or 2) eat a brownie afterwards. That might be me more than the recipe, but that’s how it goes.
Whole Grain Tortillas instead of artisan breads. When I go to Panera or other sandwich places, wraps are supposed to be healthier. But I just love a good grilled sandwich on artisan bread, it is just too good. I love carbs.
Raw Veggies instead of tortilla chips. Now, I do like some raw veggies. But most of them, I really don’t like. I much prefer veggies cooked; I’ll eat any veggie cooked! But I am not a fan of them raw.
Raisins instead of chocolate chips. Let’s not even talk about this one.
Egg whites instead of the whole egg. They are just too watery for me. I really don’t like eggs plain (give me the granola!)
I’m not saying I hate those aforementioned foods; they just aren’t my favorite. I’m convinced that a good recipe can make almost anything taste good, so like with the egg whites, kale, or tortilla, I’m sure I could make it in a way I really liked them. The others – I’ve just never liked them
Foods I just don’t like:
Beef jerky (just … no)
Potato chips (tortilla, pita, corn – just not potato unless it is kettle)
Hot dogs (I’m a brats and sausages kind of gal)
Pancakes (I know it … give me a waffle … covered in whipped cream and syrup)
Celery (how does anyone eat this stuff? It is bitter and stringy – bleck)
Plain white rice (so.so.boring. And I even have a quarter Japanese in me. How did that happen?)
Bubble gum (nastiest stuff ever. It is so sickly sweet.)
Grape jelly (I don’t know why I don’t like it … too sweet? Maybe I just don’t like mashed up grapes, because I do like other jellies)
Butterscotch (just not my favorite)
Actually, I was asking my family if they could come up with five foods I don’t like and they couldn’t SO I hope you don’t think I am a picky eater. I really will eat just about anything … except for the above mentioned 😉
Healthier Foods I actually like (love!):
And if you’ve been reading my blog for any time, you know my favorites are nut butters and chocolate.
What about you?
